My previous install was centered around
an enormous, 1.6 ft^3 subbox sitting in the trunk with my amps mounted on
it. Although the install sounded great, it took up more of my trunk than I
wanted. It also lacked uniqueness, something very important to me.
After lots of cogitation and careful planning, I decided that it was time
to completely redo the install.
Here is the new trunk ...
Pretty empty, huh?
Same basic shot but a different angle, you can now see the gear bolted to
the roof of the trunk: two JL amps (300/4 and 500/1) and two AudioControl
1/3 octave equalizers (EQT). I'll put the 0.5 farad cap in next week.
So where is the sub? Hehe, let's just say that getting a flat tire will be
a rather different experience for me ...
My single 12" Alumapro Alchemy sits where the spare tire used to go. I've
purchased the non-BMW version of the mobility kit (pump, two cans of filler,
and a plug kit, all for less than $30) AND the sub box is easily removable
(twist and pull) should I need to reinsert the spare tire and jack for longer
trips. However, when we go for longer family trips we take the Volvo wagon
anyway, so the added hassle really is not such a big sacrifice for me.
The sub fires through a metal grill flush with the wood, so the carpet on
top is nice and flat.
Getting all of that low frequency energy is done by cutting out where the
ski-sack would be (were I to have one). My previous 4"x10" opening was enlarged
to roughly triple that with a strip of wood down the middle to prevent any
wild elbows from piercing the carpet.
When closed, it looks normal as always. The system sounds GREAT with more
bass entering the cabin than before. Hopefully, Amir (AHA) and Louie (Evolution247)
chime in with their opinions.
Stealth stereos - gotta love it.
BTW, I have the original Agent99-built 12"-ready sub box sitting at my house
in NorCal, free for anyone who wants to come buy and pick it up. It is rock
solid and sounds great.
