BMW E39 Wheel Service Tools &
Locks
Prepared by VietSB
Modified 12.29.02
NOTE: Perform these steps at your
own risk. All P/Ns listed are a "best guess", so please double-check with your
local dealer. These mods and repairs were performed on my US-Spec 1997 540iA
(11/96 prod date, M62 engine) but there is no guarantee they will work on other
E39s. These instructions are provided for entertainment purposes only!
BACKGROUND: I wanted to prevent this and other wheel removal/installation
mishaps:
Recommend Tools:
- Portable breaker bar for the car
- 1/2" torque wrench to dial in 88 ft-lbs
- Ultimate Garage wheel hanger tool
- Astro Pneumatic lugnut service sockets - Assorted SAE and metric,
impact-wrench okay (I found them cheap here)
- Wheel locks
A pic of how the special sockets protect the rim as well as the tip of the lug
bolts w/ the plastic insert and sleeve.
Unfortunately, the hanger tool no longer works for me since the lug bolt holes
on these new rims are much smaller than my stock rims. I can still use it
after-the-fact to keep the rim on while fishing for a lug bolt and socket, but
that defeats the purpose.
McGard (search for "Car | BMW | ALL 77-02"):
I've used these for years on my E30 and still have my wheels! The key now
has a sleeve to prevent dents in your rim when it tumbles off the lug. McGard is
recommended and sold by Tire Rack.
BMP looks like they sell McGard as well:
Maybe more expensive than TireRack, but check P/N's to be sure.
BMW Style 1 (or here):
Looks functional, but not I'm not sure how unique the keys are.
BMW
Style 2:
Too expensive and complicated for my tastes. Available thru BMW dealerships.
Bavarian Autosport (click on
"departments | wheels & tires | wheel locks" on the left navigation bar):
These are my favorite because they look stock with the silver or black caps
on. The price is in the middle of everything else and the key seems secure and
won't fall off easily.
